There's going to be a workshop in Butte, MT on July 18th at the Sacred Ground studio. I'd like to email some fliers to anyone who would be willing to print up a few and give them out in their classes. Here's a bit of info about the workshop:

Middle Eastern Dance and Music Workshop in the Copper City!
With Suzan
July 18th from 10:00 – 3:00 at the Sacred Ground in Butte, MT

This workshop is designed to provide a good foundation in the basic movements associated with all styles of Middle Eastern dance by focusing on how the movements and music go together. The classes are appropriate for all levels of dancers, from first timers to seasoned performers. Even drummers and musicians will enjoy the rhythm and style workshops! Handouts and follow-up emails will be provided.

The first class will cover basic steps and dance vocabulary. In the second two classes, we’ll introduce a rhythm, listen to it, learn to play it on zills and/or drum, then learn a number of steps that work well with the rhythm. We’ll then learn to recognize the rhythms in various songs. This will be valuable for improving both choreography and improvising skills. Rhythms covered will include Masmoudi, Baladii, Ciftetelli, Falahii, and Karsilama. Bring zills (finger cymbals) if you have them, some will be available to borrow. The final class will include a video lecture. We’ll look at examples of dancers representing different styles (Classical Egyptian, American Cabaret, Tribal, Turkish, etc.) and learn how to modify the basic steps to fit the different styles.

Cost: $25.00 for the workshop or $10.00 for individual classes.

To register in advance, send an email to athansor_rises@yahoo.com, and/or send payment to

About Suzan
Suzan has been dancing for about 27 years. Like so many dancers from the Southwest, she first started learning with Libby Prothero in Albuquerque. Later instructors include Layla Najma, Maureen Newsom and Janette Brenner, known for not only her dancing, but also her amazing zill technique. She was a member of the Et Alia dance troupe under the directorship of Julie Johnson and has taught dance in Roswell NM and Odessa, TX before moving to Montana. Her style is mainly Egyptian but she enjoys dancing and learning about all the major styles of Middle Eastern Dance. In addition she is an accomplished doumbek and zill player.

Hafla and Potluck to follow the event!
